依據所列的參考資料,皆描述:甲狀腺素(T3和T4)雖屬於胺類激素,但為親脂性的激素,故其在血液中的運輸還須透過甲狀腺素結合球蛋白(thyronine-binding globulin , TBG)、甲狀腺結合前白蛋白(Thyroxine-binding prealbumin or Transthyretin)或血漿白蛋白(serum albumin)作為攜帶蛋白(請見下表)。

另一方面,雖然甲狀腺素為親脂性的激素,但不是透過簡單擴散進入目標細胞內,而是透過跨膜的碘甲狀腺胺酸運輸蛋白(transmembrane iodothyronine transporters)運輸,再與細胞核內的甲狀腺素受體(thyroid hormone receptors)結合,最後作用在特定基因的啟動子,調節基因的表現。
